Valentine’s is coming soon and I’m excited to share these breakable chocolate hearts with you.

When I was thinking about Valentine’s, I really wanted something fun for my kids. Since the chocolate bombs were such a big hit during the holidays, I wanted to take that idea and give it a little twist.

These chocolate hearts are not filled with hot cocoa mix, but with sweet treats. And to reveal the goodies inside, you will have to break the heart. Along with these adorable chocolate hearts, we provided a kid-friendly scavenger hunt too. Make them work for their treats!

My kids had a great time with this activity and we hope you enjoy it too. XOXO

Here are the tools and ingredients used to make these breakable chocolate hearts.

  • Wilton red heart mini silicone mold-these are the same ones I used to make the heart-shaped raspberry mousse. As mentioned in that post, I found them at my local Wal-Mart. Even though it appears available on their website, it can only be purchased in-store. If you can’t get these exact molds, there are plenty of other options too. Just make sure the hearts are big enough to put candies inside.
  • Chocolate melts- pink, white, chocolate, and red.
Ingredients to make breakable chocolate heart

Melt chocolate

Melt chocolate in a double broiler. Simply fill a pot with one or two inches of water. Next, add a heat-proof bowl on top of the pot and turn on your burner to medium and bring the water to a simmer, not boiling. Make sure the bowl is not touching the water. As the water heats up and steam is released, the steam stays trapped between the pot and bowl which then heats the bowl and melts the chocolate. I find that when I melt chocolate using this method my chocolate doesn’t burn.

When all your chocolate is melted, take the bowl off the pot.

Assembling the chocolate hearts

Since these chocolate hearts are pretty big, I’m not going to put two halves together. Instead, I’m going to make a heart base for the chocolate hearts.

On parchment paper, take a heart-shaped cookie cutter that is roughly the same size as the heart mold and outlined it with a pencil. Then flipped the parchment paper over and carefully spread some melted chocolate into the shape of a heart. Make sure you have a good layer of chocolate. If it’s too thin, it will break.

Now, fill the heart mold with about 3 Tbsp. of melted chocolate and take a spoon to help spread the chocolate evenly. Add more if needed. You want to make sure you have enough chocolate around the edges. Allow the first layer of chocolate to solidify and then add another layer, making sure to cover everything. Place in the fridge for about 10-15 minutes.

When the chocolate hearts are ready, carefully peel the mold away from the chocolate. To be honest, these chocolate hearts are tricky to get out of the mold. If the chocolate hearts break, just remelt the chocolate and start over. It’s no big deal. Practice makes perfect.

Now that you have the two pieces ready, let’s add some goodies inside and seal it up.

In the same pot that you used for the double broiler. Re-heat the water and once the water is boiling take it off the stovetop and place a plate on the pot. The steam from the water will warm up the plate, so it will help melt the chocolate hearts. Also, make sure to have a small bowl of extra melted chocolate.

Take the chocolate heart and place it on the warm plate for about 3-5 seconds. Then quickly fill the chocolate heart with your choice of candy and carefully press the heart base ( use the smooth side) and the chocolate hearts together. If you see that there are gaps between the base and the heart, take the extra melted chocolate and with the back of a spoon add chocolate to cover those gaps.

Once the two pieces are sealed together place them in the fridge for about 5 minutes. Then carefully, with a sharp knife cut off the excess chocolate that surrounds the heart to get a nice, clean edge.

Now it’s time to get creative and decorate the chocolate hearts. Here, I just melted some pink chocolate melts, and drizzled it on top of the heart and added some fun sprinkles. It’s so cute!
