Chocolate chip cookies have always been my favorite cookie. These sweet treats are what started my love of baking. There have been a lot of trial and error trying to find the right texture and taste.
One of my first attempts at baking chocolate chip cookies was when I first attended college at BYU. During that time, my now-husband was serving a mission for our church and spent three months at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah, which is literally a block or two from my dorm. I wanted to impress him so I baked him some chocolate chip cookies. At that time, I wasn’t a great baker and was known in my family for burning my food.
As I was baking these sad cookies, I got distracted watching Will and Grace and overbaked them. When I pulled them out of the oven they had a nice dark golden color to them. I took a bite into it and it was pretty crispy and figured they were good enough. I packed them in an empty Pringles tube and sent it to my missionary. Years later he finally told me he almost broke his tooth trying to take a bite out of one of the cookies. By the time the cookies got to him, they were rock solid. But he still ate them anyway. Oh, young love!
Since then I’ve tried many cookie recipes, tweaking them to find the taste and texture to my liking. So if any of you are trying to impress a young love, or anyone in general, I want to share my Heavenly Chocolate Chip Cookies with you! I love this recipe because the taste is spot on: sweet, soft in the middle, crispy on the edges, and chocolaty!
Pointers for making Heavenly Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Make sure your butter is softened or at room temperature. If you are anything like me and decide to make cookies in the spur of the moment, you can soften it in the microwave…carefully! Soften it in 5-10 second increments in the microwave, then turn the butter and soften for a couple of seconds until softened. Don’t walk away from your butter of you’ll come back to a puddle of butter!
- I highly encourage sifting the dry ingredients. I just feel like this helps mix the flour and softens it up which results in a chewier texture.
- Use dark chocolate chips. The slight bitter taste helps to cut the sweetness of the cookies.
- If possible, chill the cookie dough for 15 minutes.
- Use a oven thermometer if you have one to make sure your oven is telling you the truth! Often times when my oven beeps and says it’s done preheating, it’s actually 10-15 degrees cooler than the preheat temperature. Then towards the end of baking, my oven sometimes will spike up 10 degrees or so.
- Keep an eye on your cookies towards the ends of baking. Don’t pull them out when they are still pale. Wait until the tops of your cookies start showing a nice brown color.
