Our homemade salted caramel sauce is divine! Eat it alone, with apples, over your pancakes or waffles, drizzle it on cakes or cupcakes, or fill macarons with this deliciousness. Seriously, it’s that amazing.
Making caramel at home might sound a little intimidating, but we promise it’s the easiest thing and no special tools are required. And once you make this homemade salted caramel sauce you will never want to purchase it again.
Ingredients:
Sugar, water, heavy whipping cream, butter and vanilla extract(not pictured). That’s it! So simple.
How to make homemade salted caramel sauce:
- Heat granulated sugar and water in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
- Let the sugar and water come to a simmer. At this time resist the urge to mix the water and sugar while it’s boiling. Instead, you can gently swirl the pan over the heat.
- After 5-6 minutes, the syrup will start to change color around the edge of the saucepan.
- Continue to let the syrup boil until it turns a beautiful light brown color. Once the syrup becomes a golden brown color, turn the heat off. Don’t let your syrup get any darker, or your caramel well burned and taste bitter.
- Carefully pour in the heavy cream and stir with a whisk. The mixture will bubble violently, so please be careful while mixing.
- Once the caramel stops bubbling, add the butter and whisk until the butter is melted. Now, add the vanilla extract and a pinch of sea salt. Mix all the ingredients one more time.
- Now, pour the caramel sauce into a glass container to cool completely before using it. If you want the caramel to thicken up, cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge for about 1-2 hours.
WARNING! This stuff is AMAZING. I couldn’t keep my children away from it. Now, drizzle this liquid gold on all your favorite treats to make them extra special. Or pack it up and gift it during the holidays to all your family and friends.

November 10, 2020 at 3:38 amOkay, I needed this post about a year ago!! I tried making my own caramel for my husband’s flan dessert and totally botched it. 😂 This recipe and the steps look much more manageable. Thanks!

November 9, 2020 at 9:07 pmIt seems similar to the fudge they make in the UK. I never attempted to make my own salted caramel sauce, but it is my favourite vanilla ice cream sauce; maybe I should!
