Hot cocoa is the ultimate holiday and winter treat. Once the air starts to get a little colder and all the leaves have fallen off the trees, you know it’s time to grab your favorite mug and make a cup of hot cocoa. And you know what makes a cup of hot cocoa so much better? A Hot Cocoa Pop! These hot cocoa pops are actually a wooden spoon dipped in chocolate to make it look like a lollipop. These are easy to make and fun to use.

Ingredients and tools for hot cocoa pops:

There really isn’t a recipe for these hot cocoa pops because you can add any toppings and different types of chocolate. These are the ingredients and tools that I used:

  • Dixie cups
  • 10 oz. dark chocolate
  • 10 oz. white chocolate
  • 1/3 cup of mini chocolate chips
  • peppermint candy- crushed
  • sprinkles of your choice
  • Disposable wooden spoons, plastic spoons will work too
Ingredients for hot cocoa pops

The first thing you want to do is melt your chocolate. Here are two different methods:

Microwave – Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 20% power for 15 seconds; remove the bowl from the microwave and stir. Repeat the process until most of the chocolate has melted and is smooth.

Double boiler- To melt chocolate on the stovetop, place the chocolate in a glass bowl over a pot of barely simmering water. Do not allow the water to touch the bowl. This method keeps the chocolate away from direct heat which allows it to melt at a low enough temperature to prevent scorching and separating. This is my preferred method. I like that you can easily see and control how fast the chocolate melts. I have burnt my chocolate several times using the microwave method. You can decide which one works best for you.

Now that you have the chocolate melted, you can pour layers for your hot cocoa pop and add toppings. You can also add food coloring to your white chocolate for additional colors.

Time to make your hot cocoa pops:

If you’re just pouring one layer, go ahead and add about 1/4 cup of chocolate into a Dixie cup. Add your toppings before the layer cools down, about 3-4 minutes, and stick your wooden spoon in the middle of the cup. Next, place the cup in the fridge for about 30 min so that the chocolate can set.

If you would like to have two or three different layers, it can get a little tricky. You only want to fill the cup about 1/4 of the way. Each layer also needs to cool before adding the next layer, or they’ll just mix together. Allow 2-3 minutes in between each layer. Just make sure your chocolate is still soft enough, so you can stick your spoon in. Once you have all the layers poured, place them in the fridge for about 30 min.

Once your hot cocoa pops have cooled down you can take them out of the cups. If the pops have a hard time coming out you can cut the cup on the side.

Now just add them to your hot cup of cocoa or give them away as gifts. We also provided a cute tag if you choose to give them away as a holiday gift to family and friends. We really hope you give these a try and enjoy them with your loved ones.
